William J. Fishkind, M.D., FACS
1946 – 2026
In Memoriam: Our Founder
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our founder, Dr. William J. Fishkind, on October 1, 2026. Dr. Fishkind founded Oracle Eye Physicians & Surgeons and was its original partner. He guided the Practice as Founder and Medical Director for more than 30 years before retiring in 2019. Even in retirement, he stayed devoted to the Practice’s outreach and to ophthalmology education. His vision, skill, and commitment to his patients built the foundation of this Practice, and his legacy continues in the care we provide every day.
Dr. Fishkind earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed a medical residency at the Harvard Primary Care Program in Boston, followed by an ophthalmology residency at a combined program of the USPHS Hospital and Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He was board certified in both internal medicine and ophthalmology.
He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which recognized him with its Honor Award, Senior Honor Award, and Secretariat Award. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as President of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, later becoming president emeritus.
Dr. Fishkind was a respected teacher both nationally and internationally. He was a visiting professor at numerous universities and gave many scientific presentations. He lectured and operated as an instructing guest surgeon across the United States and in Ireland, Spain, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, China, and Korea. He edited two major textbooks, Complications in Phacoemulsification: Avoidance, Recognition, and Management and Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implantation, both published by Thieme in New York. He also wrote many articles and book chapters on phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. His peers named him one of America’s Top Physicians and one of Tucson’s Best 100 Doctors, and he was listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Fishkind family. We are deeply grateful for the years he gave to this Practice, to his patients, and to the profession he loved.
