FAQ

Questions & Answers About Eye Glasses

Choosing prescription eyeglasses often comes with questions about lens options, frame styles, coatings, prescription changes, and everyday comfort. Below are answers to some of the questions our team commonly hears from patients visiting our Tucson optical department.

Why do I need eyeglasses?

People need eyeglasses because the light that enters the visual field is not being focused properly on the retina. In some cases, the light is being focused in front of the retina. In other cases, it ends up behind the retina. This leads to problems with someone’s vision. Eyeglasses have corrective lenses that will fix this problem.

Do I need new eyeglasses every year?

Not necessarily. We do encourage all of our patients to have their vision evaluated every year. In some cases, the prescription may change and someone will need new lenses. In this case, we may be able to pop the new lenses into the existing frame.

Do I need to wear eyeglasses forever?

Many people who need corrective lenses end up having them for life; however, some people are candidates for laser eye surgery that may eliminate the need for eyeglasses. Our trained refractive surgeons offer the best LASIK or PRK procedures in Southern Arizona.

How do I take care of my eyeglasses?

It is important to keep the lenses clean so that nothing obstructs the visual field. When the glasses aren’t being worn, it is also important to store them in a protective case. This will prevent the glasses from being broken or lost.

Get Glasses With The Right Fit and Frame in Tucson

Eyeglass frame materials have changed significantly over the years, giving patients more options for lightweight comfort, long-term durability, and flexible everyday wear. Modern frame designs now include materials such as titanium, stainless steel, and other advanced alloys that can provide a different feel and fit compared to older, heavier frame styles.

At Oracle Eye Physicians & Surgeons, our optical team continues reviewing newer frame designs and lens technology as they become available so patients have access to updated options that balance comfort, appearance, fit, and prescription support for everyday use.

Choosing Eyeglasses for Your Face Shape

Oval: If you have an oval face shape, the recommended frames include aviator, browline, rectangle, and square. You want to avoid oversized frames and pick frames that are as wide as the widest part of the face in order to balance proportions.

Round: For a round face shape, try round, aviator, square, and rectangular options. You can also try a clear bridge in order to help widen your eyes.

Square: For square faces, you want to avoid small or rectangular frames and instead choose browline, round, aviator, and cat-eye glasses.

Diamond: A diamond face shape looks best with round, oval, browline, or cat-eye glasses.

Pear: With a pear-shaped face, aviator and browline frames look best and you want to avoid round, square, and oval.

Heart: With a heart-shaped face, choose a rectangle, aviator, geometric, oval, and round frames. Avoid oval, browline, and square frames.

Choosing Eyeglasses for Your Hair Color, Skin Tone, and Eye Color

Once you get the right frames that look best for your eyeglasses you will need to choose the right ones to complement the coloration of your eyes, face, and hair.

Skin tones are categorized as cool or warm. Frames that are camel, gold, copper, orange, off white, coral, warm blue, or blond tortoise look best for warm coloring. For cool coloring, choose frames that are black, silver, rose-brown, pink, jade, and darker tortoise. Eye color is usually a secondary element in determining your coloring. Hair color can also be considered cool or warm. Warm hair colors include golden blond, brownish-black, and brown gold. Cool hair colors are platinum, blue-black, auburn, and ash brown.

Chosing the Perfect Lenses For Your Eye Glasses

Lens technology has continued evolving over the years, especially with the development of progressive lenses, often referred to as “no-line bifocals.” These lenses are designed to help patients transition more naturally between distance, intermediate, and near vision without the visible lines found in traditional bifocal lenses. Improvements in lens design have also helped many patients who may have struggled with older progressive lens styles in the past.

Modern lens materials have also become noticeably thinner, lighter, and more comfortable for everyday wear, especially for patients with stronger prescriptions who previously dealt with heavier or bulkier lenses. At Oracle Eye Physicians & Surgeons, our optical team stays connected with major lens manufacturers so we can continue offering updated lens materials, coatings, and prescription technologies as newer options become available.

Our Optical Shops Offer Advanced Lens Technology for Your Eye Glasses

  • Plastic hard resin lenses (CR-39)
  • Available in more styles and sizes than any other material. Known for being reasonably priced, good optics, tints well. Polycarbonate
  • The most impact resistant material. Best choice for safety lenses, children’s lenses. Always comes with scratch guard and U.V. filter. Does not tint well. Prone to peripheral distortion, especially in larger frames. Also known to produce chromatic aberration (distortion of colors). Should not be used without anti-reflective coating (see below) Mid-index plastics (Phoenix, Trivex, Trilogy)
  • Newer generation of lenses which combine many of the features of plastic hard resins and polycarbonate. Designed to be thin and light, without the negatives of polycarbonate. Considered similar to Resolution but with greater availability of styles and sizes. Generally manufactured as a “non-aspheric” product which is beneficial in that it tends to be flatter, with less distortion problems. Hi-index plastics (1.6, 1.67, 1.74)
  • Specifically designed for the patient with very strong prescriptions. These lenses are quite flat, making the addition of an anti-reflective coating (see below) imperative. The most advanced of all lenses.

Eyeglasses Designed Around Comfort, Fit & Prescription Needs

At Oracle Eye Physicians & Surgeons, our optical department is staffed by licensed opticians who continue their education and stay current with changing eyewear technology, lens materials, and fitting methods. We believe selecting prescription eyewear involves more than simply choosing frames, especially when different prescriptions, work environments, hobbies, and day-to-day routines can all affect which lenses and frame styles may work best for the patient.

Our team takes time to understand how your glasses will actually be used throughout the day so we can help guide you through different frame styles, lens technologies, coatings, and prescription options. Proper fit, lens positioning, comfort, and visual clarity can all make a significant difference in how eyewear performs during everyday use.

Today’s eyewear options also include lenses designed around specific activities such as computer use, reading, athletics, driving, and other daily visual demands. Our optical team helps patients explore different combinations of frames and lenses so they can find eyewear that feels comfortable, functions well, and supports their vision needs more naturally throughout the day.
